STORM BARRIERS
As we stated earlier, after reviewing the barriers available to us as a means of preventing a repeat of the massive damage caused by the flooding from Sandy, and knowing that our concern is more from the rising water than the crashing of waves and floating debris, Rashad met with an architect and discussed a similar design but with engineered materials which would be considerably less expensive and certainly a lot less weight. The engineer has finalized the design and attached the “proposal.” Mr. John Salaverry, unit 3050, met with the architect on site and discussed the proposed barrier system. As the architect stated to John, he felt with a good degree of certainty that the fabrication of this barrier would dramatically reduce, if not completely prevent, any water from entering thru the sliding door opening. Unless you have penetrated the concrete wall for some reason, this is the only point of entry from rapid inflow of water.
A quick description:
A 4″ wide x 10′ long x 30″ deep concrete ledge(which would also be necessary for the previously discussed aluminum systems) will be poured and affixed to the existing foundation wall across the length of the sliding door opening and reinforced with rebar and adhesive bonding. On the existing concrete foundation, along the vertical side of the opening for the sliding door, will be trim boards, 5/4 x 41/2″ x 4′ of engineered material, which will be permanently sealed in place with silicone and stainless steel anchors. A 1″ x 4′ x 9’8″ sheet of Azek engineered material which will be reinforced with 5/4 x 31/2″ supports will be attached with silicone and the anchors to the vertical trim boards during the hurricane season. In the off season, hangers will be made to store this sheet from the underside of the upper deck.
In most cases the walls on either side of the sliding door opening are free of an encumbrances. For these units, Rashad stated the cost would be $2,800.00. For those units that might have encumbrances, a fee will need to be determined by Rashad. This is a fraction- 1/3 to 1/4 the cost- of the previously described aluminum units. Anyone interested should contact Rashad @ 631 463 1840 to schedule a time.
You will receive a copy of this letter along with a schematic of the flood barrier in the coming week.
Sincerely,
